Landmark Papers, Year by Year

A year-by-year timeline of radio astronomy through its most influential papers — roughly the top three per year since Karl Jansky's founding work. It complements the thematic Bibliography (which groups the field's seminal papers by topic); this page is chronological, so you can trace how the field unfolded.

How this list was built

"Top three" is a curated judgement based on historical impact and citations, not a formula — reasonable people will quibble, and the modern years (thousands of radio papers annually) are necessarily a sample of the landmarks. Every entry was link-verified against NASA ADS, arXiv, or a publisher DOI at compile time (mid-2026); papers that could not be verified were left out rather than guessed. The earliest decades were genuinely sparse — some years list fewer than three (or none), because that is the honest historical record, not an omission.

1930s — the founding

Radio astronomy is born, then lies almost dormant: between Jansky's discovery and Grote Reber, almost no one pursued it. 1934, 1936, and 1938–39 have no major radio-astronomy papers.
